How to organize your closet for a capsule wardrobe

I have been practicing the idea of a capsule wardrobe for several years, but only recently have I decided to organize the closet to fit it. Until now, the interior of my closet didn’t fully meet my needs, so I began to wonder how I can change it. Usually the closet contains not only clothes for current season, but all the clothes you have. So my point was that „moving” inside it should have a certain flow around things that I use in a given season, and above all , I should also find them easily in one place.

How to organize your closet – 3 zones

Closet organizing 3 zones – By trial and error I found the right solution. My plan was to draw three zones inside the closet: the first one for clothes and shoes for a given season, the second for things that are used throughout the year, and the third for things that are not used at all in the current season. Thus, a capsule zone, a year-round zone and a storage zone were created. I will show you the layout of these parts on the example of my wardrobe, but I think that they can be easily get in each of them.

1| Seasonal zone

In this zone, there are hangers. From the left: dresses for a current season that are often worn, next to them there are jackets and shirts. Behind them there is a space for outerwear used in a given season. Pants and skirts hang on an additional bar below. I had to hang my longer skirts higher because they hadn’t fit. The seasonal zone also includes special shelves for seasonal shoes.

2| Year-around zone

This is the drawer area. They include underwear, socks and tights. The last drawer has some space for sports bags that I carry for training. I keep the „tops”, other than shirts, outside the wardrobe. If I did not have such a possibility, I would definitely do it differently and have more traditional drawers. These bins were already in my wardrobe before the reorganization (in the part where there are now shelves for shoes). I decided to reuse them. However, if I had to fit everything into this one piece of furniture, I would turn them into drawers and use their surface to the maximum.

3| Storage zone

To store unused items, I have the top shelves and a smaller wardrobe compartment. I keep shoes, outerwear and dresses for other seasons there, as well as little used all-year dresses „for special occasions”. Items that are stored tehere are packed in boxes and covers so that they do not dust. Coats for colder days are prepared to pick up quick, but still within that compartment. There are also boxes that I will reuse, for example, for packing parcels when I send things to someone. In winter, I also put a box with hats and scarves here.

All my „tops” are stored on a shelf in my dressing room. The compartments are square and fit 1 stack, so could actually be the equivalent of 1/3 of a drawer. And so the following items are separated: basic shirts, long-sleeved blouses, thin sweaters, and also sweaters and sweatshirts. In addition, there is a pile of sports clothes for weekly workouts and two piles of homewear – tops and bottoms separately. One compartment is for handbags only. Additionally, there are boxes in the compartments: for all other sports things, for snowboard clothes, for summer things, for winter things, and a box for things to be „thought over”.

All in all, the organization of my wardrobe looks pretty good at the moment. How did you deal with the problem? Do you have your own ways of organizing a wardrobe next to a capsule wardrobe? Or maybe you are just at the stage of organizing your wardrobe? Then read this post.
